MOSCOW, Oct 9 (PRIME) -- Russia will start switching to electronic passports from 2021 to leave paper documents behind with the concept counting five years of talks already, business daily Vedomosti reported on Tuesday.
The digital passport idea was again discussed at meetings held by Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov on September 14 and by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on September 17.
The electronic passport will gradually grant its owner access to all state registers and state services, and records on the provision of such services will be also kept electronically, according to the government.
The new passport could look like a plastic card of the size of a banking card.
